Seeds Along the Highway

Planted by John Kaminski

Team: Christmas Island Worldwide · Team member John Kaminski

Long before Seeds of Kindness had a name, I had gotten into the habit of keeping seeds with me when I travelled. Some were packets from Spirit Creek Gardens; others were wildflower and other seeds I had collected along the way.

Where the idea began

On longer drives, when I stopped to stretch my legs or take a break, every so often I would bring a packet with me, find an appropriate place away from maintained roadway areas, plant a few seeds, and then carry on. There was no website, QR code or community garden attached to it. Most of the time I never knew what happened afterward. I just liked the thought that somewhere along a road I had travelled, a few flowers might eventually appear where there had been none before.

What I learned from the road

The part that stayed with me was not knowing the outcome. I did not need to know whether anybody saw the flowers or whether every seed grew. The act itself was enough. Years later, that idea helped shape Seeds of Kindness: do something small, leave something positive behind, and give it a chance to grow beyond you.

The story continues

Seeds of Kindness gives those little planting moments a place to be remembered and shared. This founding story now connects the stops along the route, the Christmas Island Worldwide team, and the stories that come afterward. The hope is simple: one small act can encourage another.

The growing story

Plant thoughtfully. Use regionally appropriate, non-invasive seed, follow local rules and landowner requirements, and avoid maintained rights-of-way, protected areas and sensitive habitat.
