Why I Kept Planting Them

Shared by John Kaminski

I never needed to know exactly what happened after I planted the seeds. That was part of what made the habit meaningful.

Something small was enough

A packet did not take up much room in the vehicle, and planting a few seeds did not take much time. It was simply a way to leave a place with a little more possibility than it had before I stopped there.

Not knowing was part of it

Most of those stops never came with an answer. I did not go back to check every location, and there was no expectation that anyone would know who had planted anything. Maybe some seeds grew. Maybe some did not. The point was never recognition.

Why it became Seeds of Kindness

Eventually I realized that the same idea could be shared with other people. A seed packet could carry a dedication, a story, a memory or a simple act of encouragement. Seeds of Kindness grew from the belief that small things can matter even when we never get to see the full result.

The growing story

Plant thoughtfully. Use regionally appropriate, non-invasive seed, follow local rules and landowner requirements, and avoid maintained rights-of-way, protected areas and sensitive habitat.
